| Beyond Independence is currently owned
and operated by me, Chris Lamoreaux. I got my Bachelor of Science
from Tufts University and my Masters degree from Stanford University; both in mechanical engineering.
I currently work as a mechanical design
engineer.
As you can see, I am in a wheelchair, and proud of
it. I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
I am a mechanical engineer with a passion for mechanical
design. I love to create things and have a number of ideas that
I want to explore. First -- my wheelchair spinners! I have a special
interest in design for wheelchairs and individuals with physical
disabilities. So many items are designed only to let wheelchair
users “survive,” and do not have any excitement or creativity
associated with them. I want to change some of those designs and
products so that they are great -- not merely functional.
Do my spinners serve a serious functional purpose?
NO! But that’s the point! They offer a means of giving wheelchairs
a unique personality. I use my spinners all the time, even at work.
I get great complimented on them all the time. You will too.
What’s next? Well… I would love to get
involved in designing vehicle modifications or other adapted equipment for people in wheelchairs. I currently drive a
Mazda RX-8 and love it. I do NOT drive JUST a van (I have a van, but that's beside the point)! I believed
I could drive a different car, and Freewheels
of Denver, Colorado was adventurous enough to work with me and make
it possible. And, I love it!
I see an opportunity to extend the vehicle base for
wheelchair users with some mobility impairment. That’s in
the future…for now, spinners! Feel free to contact me if you
have any ideas for Beyond Independence. And, of course, contact
me if you’re interested in investing in Beyond Independence’s
future.
Thank you,
Chris Lamoreaux
